Before Summer Checks Out, Check Your Roof

South Carolina Summer Isn’t Finished Quite Yet — And Neither Is Your Roof’s Work.

By late August, your asphalt shingle roof has already spent months taking everything a Midlands summer can throw at it: intense sunshine, high temperatures, humidity, heavy downpours, thunderstorms and strong wind.

Most of the time, your roof handles all of that without much attention from you. But as we begin looking toward fall, now is a great time to give it a little attention in return.

Asphalt shingles are designed to stand up to the elements, but weather and age can eventually take their toll.

Strong winds can lift shingles or weaken their seal. Heavy rain can find its way into areas where flashing or other roofing components have been compromised. Hail and flying debris can damage shingles and cause granule loss.

And then there’s something every South Carolinian knows well: the summer sun.

Month after month of heat and UV exposure contributes to the natural aging of roofing materials. An older roof that already has brittle, cracked, curling or poorly sealed shingles may be especially vulnerable when the next strong storm arrives.

Take a Look — From the Ground!

You don’t need to climb onto your roof to spot some common warning signs. In fact, we’d rather you leave the climbing to us!

Take a walk around your home and look for:

  • Missing, lifted, curled or damaged shingles
  • Areas of the roof that look noticeably different from the rest
  • Excessive shingle granules collecting near downspouts
  • Damaged or loose flashing
  • Tree limbs or debris resting on the roof
  • Gutters that are clogged, sagging or overflowing
  • Dark stains, water spots or other signs of moisture inside your home or attic

Sometimes roof damage is obvious. Sometimes it isn’t.

A shingle doesn’t necessarily have to be completely missing to have been affected by wind or a summer storm. That’s one reason having a professional take a closer look can be worthwhile when something doesn’t seem right.

Don’t Forget What’s Coming Next

Fall may bring cooler temperatures, but it also brings falling leaves, pine needles, branches and other debris.

Gutters and downspouts need to move water away from your roof and home. When they’re clogged with leaves and debris, water may back up where you don’t want it.

If you have trees close to your home, this is also a good time to look for dead or overhanging limbs that could become a problem during the next storm.

Repair It Now or Replace It?

One missing shingle.

Finding a problem doesn’t automatically mean you need a new roof.

Sometimes a repair is exactly what’s needed. A few damaged shingles, flashing issues or another isolated problem may be repairable depending on the condition and age of the overall roofing system.

But if your asphalt shingle roof is showing widespread wear, has experienced repeated leaks or storm damage, or is simply aging after several decades, it may be time to start discussing replacement.

That’s where an experienced roofer can help you separate “this needs attention” from “it’s time for a new roof.”

At Clyde Nettles Roofing, we’re not interested in selling you something you don’t need. We’ll take a look, explain what we find and help you understand your options.
