We are not even into February yet, and already the weather experts are calling for more extreme cold and possible wintery mix yet again next week in South Carolina. Considering the extreme cold and winter storms we’ve already experienced, it’s crucial to understand how these conditions can impact the lifespan of your roof. Remember – any time there is extreme weather, your roof becomes even more vital in safeguarding your family and your living space.
Those tree limbs that have been hanging over your home for a few years now may have posed no problems yet, but let an ice storm roll through and now we have a big problem. Ice can significantly increase the weight of a tree limb, with just a half-inch of ice adding 2-5 pounds per foot to every limb. This added weight can stress the tree, causing limbs to bend, snap, or even bring down entire trees, especially if they’re already weak or compromised.
Rapid freezing and thawing cycles can cause shingles to expand and contract repeatedly, which can lead to cracks, curling/lifting, weakened seals, and eventual degradation. The thermal contraction during cold weather could possibly expose the roof to potential water infiltration if your shingles are compromised.
You may think we never have to worry about this living in South Carolina – however, for a quick reminder: Feb 12-13 in 2010, Columbia, SC recorded 8.6 inches of snowfall. So although it doesn’t happen often, it can happen. Although snow is much less dense and lighter than ice, it does add weight and moisture to your roof – especially if you have a low-pitched roof.
Remember how we said extreme temperatures cause expansion and contraction in shingles? Extremely cold temps will cause other materials, like metal, to also contract. If you have metal flashing surrounding a chimney, pipe boots, hood vent or more, it’s possible it can pull away from your shingles or sealant and cause possible leaks and water damage.
The bottom line is this: extreme cold weather can shorten the lifespan of your roof. Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to identify and address issues as soon as possible, and help extend the life of your roof.
We hope everyone stays warm during these winter cold spells and although we would like to maybe see a little snow, we hope it isn’t too much and certainly doesn’t include ice or additional potential dangers.
